This month, SustainabilityExamples.com is proud to recognise the Guinness Enterprise Centre (GEC) as our Initiative of the Month for a sustainability initiative that perfectly reflects the future of enterprise: collaborative, practical, and powered by innovation.
Since 2024, the GEC has been operating a major solar energy initiative delivered in partnership with one of its own client companies, Astatine - proving that sustainability leadership can thrive when entrepreneurial ecosystems work together.
The initiative has already delivered:
☀️ 102,320 kWh annual energy production
⚡ 21% reduction in grid electricity usage
🌱 Approx. 27,636 kg annual CO2 reduction
But what stood out most wasn’t just the technology.
It was the mindset behind it.
🌍 A Sustainability Story Built Within the Ecosystem
The Guinness Enterprise Centre has long been recognised as one of Ireland’s leading environments for entrepreneurs, startups, and scaling businesses.
What makes this initiative particularly compelling is that the solution came from within that ecosystem itself.
By partnering with Astatine to install 323 solar panels and a 131kW solar PV system, the GEC demonstrated something powerful:
Innovation doesn’t just happen inside startup offices.
It can shape how entire organisations operate.
This wasn’t sustainability for appearance’s sake.
It was a practical investment designed to reduce emissions, improve resilience, and lead by example.
🏆 Why the GEC Was Chosen as Initiative of the Month
Each month, SustainabilityExamples.com shortlists the three initiatives on the platform that receive the highest community engagement and upvotes.
From there, one winner is selected based on six key criteria:
🔥 Impact: The initiative is delivering measurable reductions in energy dependency and emissions.
💡 Innovation: A startup hub collaborating directly with one of its own resident companies created a uniquely circular innovation story.
📈 Scalability: The model can be replicated across enterprise centres, offices, and commercial buildings nationwide.
🎯 Accessibility: The project shows that renewable energy adoption can be practical and commercially achievable.
📊 ESG Alignment: The initiative supports long-term environmental goals while strengthening operational sustainability.
📣 Inspiration: The GEC is using its position within Ireland’s startup ecosystem to encourage others to take visible climate action.
💬 Founder Perspective
“What impressed us about the GEC initiative was how grounded and replicable it is. This wasn’t sustainability as a branding exercise — it was practical leadership backed by measurable results. The collaboration with Astatine also perfectly captures what innovation ecosystems should look like: organisations helping each other build a better future together.”

🌱 Why Sharing Progress Matters
One of the reasons this initiative resonated so strongly with the SustainabilityExamples.com community is that the GEC chose to openly share its journey.
Too often, organisations wait until everything is perfect before communicating sustainability progress. But visible action matters.
When businesses share practical initiatives - especially those with measurable outcomes - they help normalise climate action and inspire others to move forward too.
Visibility creates momentum.
And momentum creates change.
🚀 A Model for Sustainable Enterprise
The GEC initiative is a reminder that sustainability doesn’t always require radical reinvention.
Sometimes leadership looks like:
- backing innovation
- partnering smartly
- investing practically
- and taking meaningful steps forward consistently
The Guinness Enterprise Centre is proving that startup ecosystems can play a major role in Ireland’s climate transition, not only by supporting sustainable companies, but by becoming more sustainable themselves.
That’s why they are our Initiative of the Month.
